Opmerkingen

The P#47 series coincided with a period of acute economic strain in Malawi — the early 2000s saw foreign exchange reserves collapse, maize shortages tip into famine in 2002, and the IMF suspend support over governance concerns. High-denomination notes like this 200 Kwacha circulated under conditions of accelerating inflation that would, within a decade, push Malawi toward much larger face values entirely.

De La Rue's inclusion of an optical variable device on a Malawian note at this date was relatively advanced for the region's circulating currency — OVD features were still uncommon on sub-Saharan African issues outside South Africa in this period.
