The 200 Kwacha was introduced in 1995 as the highest denomination in circulation at the time — a direct consequence of inflation that had steadily eroded the purchasing power of lower notes throughout the late 1980s and early 1990s. Malawi's kwacha had been pegged to the IMF's Special Drawing Rights until a managed float was introduced in 1994, and the currency lost significant ground almost immediately after liberalization.
Thomas De La Rue printed this series at their Grosvenor Gardens facility in London, as they did for the majority of Malawian issues of this period. The security thread runs through the paper rather than being surface-applied — an embedded feature that distinguishes the genuine note from the more basic forgeries that circulated in the mid-1990s regional market.
