Sweden's commemorative coinage program expanded significantly in the early 1980s, and this issue marks a decade of Carl XVI Gustaf's reign following his accession in September 1973 after the sudden death of his grandfather Gustaf VI Adolf. The 200 kronor denomination was relatively new for Swedish commemoratives at this point, introduced specifically to accommodate silver issues at a price point above the older 50-kronor pieces.
Struck in .925 silver by the Kungliga Myntet in Eskilstuna, which had relocated from Stockholm only a decade prior.
