Issued to mark the 150th anniversary of Knut Hamsun's birth, this coin arrived during a period of renewed and deeply uncomfortable public reckoning with the author's legacy in Norway. Hamsun — widely considered one of the most influential novelists of the 20th century, a Nobel laureate in 1920 — had actively collaborated with the Nazi occupation, met with Hitler in 1943, and sent his Nobel medal to Goebbels. Commemorating him on currency remained controversial enough that the decision drew significant press at the time of issue.
Norway had previously grappled with this in 1995 when a Hamsun postage stamp sparked similar debate.
