Spiš Castle — Spišský hrad in Slovak — is one of the largest castle complexes in Central Europe by area, and its ruined bulk has sat above the Hornád valley since the 12th century. It was added to the UNESCO World Heritage list in 1993, which directly prompted the National Bank of Slovakia to commission this coin five years later as part of its ongoing cultural monuments series launched after independence in 1993.
The .750 fineness is characteristic of Slovak commemorative silver from this period — a deliberate cost compromise that kept face-value commemoratives accessible without abandoning precious metal entirely.
