This issue commemorates the centenary of Robert Peary's 1909 North Pole expedition — though whether Peary actually reached the pole remains one of the most disputed claims in exploration history. His rival Frederick Cook asserted he had done it first, in 1908, and modern analysis of Peary's navigation logs has cast serious doubt on both claims. The Czech mint's decision to mark the centenary without resolving that ambiguity is, quietly, the most honest thing about it.
