Issued to mark the Czech Republic's accession to NATO on March 12, 1999 — the same year the alliance conducted its first offensive military operation, the bombing campaign over Yugoslavia, which put the newly admitted member in the awkward position of endorsing airstrikes just weeks after joining. The Czech Republic entered alongside Hungary and Poland, the first former Warsaw Pact states admitted to the alliance.
