Issued to mark the International Year of Astronomy, this coin commemorates Johannes Kepler's three laws of planetary motion, derived largely from his years in Prague while serving as imperial mathematician to Rudolf II. Kepler published his first two laws in Astronomia Nova in 1609 — exactly four centuries before this coin's issue — making the timing precise rather than arbitrary.
The Czech claim to Kepler is legitimate: he lived and worked in Prague from 1600 until Rudolf's death in 1612, and his grave in Regensburg was destroyed during the Thirty Years' War.
