Karel Havlíček Borovský died in 1856 at thirty-four, his health destroyed by four years of internal exile in Brixen (now Bressanone, Austria), ordered by the Bach regime after his journalism became too inconvenient to tolerate through ordinary censorship. The Austrian authorities banned his newspapers — first Národní noviny, then Slovan — before resorting to deportation entirely. He was taken in the middle of the night in December 1851.
This issue marks the 200th anniversary of his birth.
