Jaroslav Seifert received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1984 — the only Czech writer ever to do so — but the Swedish Academy's decision was not without friction. The Czechoslovak state, which had spent years marginalizing Seifert for his 1956 criticism of the Writers' Union and his later role drafting Charter 77, sent no official delegation to Stockholm. He was too ill to attend the ceremony himself. This coin was issued on the centenary of his birth.
