Janko Alexy (1894–1970) was a Slovak painter and novelist best known for his autobiographical prose and his canvases depicting the Orava region. The 1994 issue marks the centenary of his birth. Slovakia had declared independence only in January 1993, and these early commemorative silver issues were among the first opportunities the new National Bank had to define a cultural iconography entirely on its own terms — Alexy, rooted in Slovak folk life and regional identity, was a deliberate choice over more internationally recognized figures.
