The Slovak Revolt of 1848 was part of the broader wave of revolutions that swept the Habsburg Empire that year, but the Slovak national movement had its own distinct character — Ľudovít Štúr and the Slovak National Council organized armed volunteer units to fight alongside Habsburg forces against the Hungarian revolutionary government, calculating that Vienna would reward Slovak loyalty with autonomy. It did not. After the revolution was suppressed, the Habsburgs restored centralized rule and offered the Slovak leaders nothing.
The bitter irony of that miscalculation haunted Slovak political identity for generations.
