Slovakia's railway history begins not with an independent state but with the Hungarian portion of the Habsburg Empire — the Košice–Bohumín line, completed in 1872, was among the first mountain railways in Central Europe and required extraordinary engineering through the Carpathian passes. The 1998 commemorative marks 150 years from the opening of the first steam railway on Slovak territory, the Bratislava–Trnava segment of the Vienna–Bochnia line, inaugurated in 1848 under Vienna's direct administration.
Struck in .750 silver rather than the finer alloys more common to Slovak commemoratives, this issue was produced in limited numbers for the collector market.
