Aversbeschreibung Central field depicts a detailed frontal view of the Dormition Cathedral of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra (Monastery of the Caves), rendered in high relief with multiple gilded domes surmounted by Orthodox crosses and elaborate Baroque architectural detailing. To the lower right, the Ukrainian state trident (tryzub) appears within a shield cartouche. The inscription 'ХІ ст' (11th century) is incused in the right field, referencing the monastery's founding. The denomination '200 ГРИВЕНЬ' appears in bold relief along the lower margin, with the date '1996' beneath the central architectural motif. The Cyrillic legend 'УКРАЇНА КИЄВО-ПЕЧЕРСЬКА ЛАВРА' arcs around the upper periphery, flanked by decorative beaded borders, with small ornamental rosette devices at each side.

Reversbeschreibung The reverse presents an elaborate allegorical religious composition in high relief depicting the Holy Trinity above a panoramic view of Kyiv. God the Father appears at upper left amid billowing clouds, God the Son (Christ) at upper right bearing a staff and orb, and the Holy Spirit as a radiant dove or angelic figure descends centrally between them, with Cyrillic tituli inscribed beside each figure. Below, a standing orant figure with arms raised heavenward is positioned before a sweeping cityscape of Kyiv's golden-domed churches and monasteries along the Dnipro River, with a boat visible in the foreground waters. The fineness inscription 'Au 900' appears at the left field and the weight '15,55' at the right field. The entire composition is framed by a fine beaded border, evoking the iconographic tradition of Ukrainian Orthodox sacred art.

Zusätzliche Informationen

Ukraine's first gold commemorative issues, released in 1996, came just five years after independence — a period when the National Bank was simultaneously fighting hyperinflation severe enough to render the karbovanets worthless and launching a new currency, the hryvnia, in September of that same year. Striking prestige gold in the middle of a monetary collapse was a deliberate act of institutional credibility.

The Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, founded in 1051 by the monk Antoniy, was seized by Soviet authorities in 1926 and only returned to the Ukrainian Orthodox Church in 1988. The Farouk reference places this among the earliest catalogued modern Ukrainian gold issues.
