Ukraine's 200 hryvnia denomination honors Lesia Ukrainka, the poet and playwright born Larysa Kosach-Kvitka in 1871, whose work was published under close tsarist censorship and whose manuscripts were frequently confiscated. The silver restrike program producing this piece has leaned heavily on high-denomination commemoratives since the 2014 Maidan revolution, partly as a foreign currency revenue mechanism and partly as a deliberate assertion of cultural independence from Russia.
The 2019 banknote design itself was introduced alongside a broader currency modernization, with improved security features targeting the high counterfeiting rates that had plagued earlier series.
