De Javasche Bank's 200 Gulden was among the highest-denomination notes in circulation in the Dutch East Indies during the final years before Japanese occupation. When Japanese forces invaded in early 1942, the colonial authorities undertook emergency destruction of currency stocks to deny usable liquidity to the occupiers — a significant portion of this series never reached the public at all.
Lion Cachet's involvement is worth noting. A Dutch artist deeply shaped by his time in Java, he brought genuine knowledge of Indonesian visual culture to his commissions for Enschedé rather than the usual orientalist approximations common to colonial banknote design of the period.
