Guinea issued this coin as part of a large commemorative series released shortly after Sékou Touré's government severed ties with the French franc zone in 1960 and established the Guinean franc. The Kennedy issue capitalized on international sympathy following both assassinations — John in 1963, Robert in 1968 — and was produced primarily for foreign sale rather than domestic circulation. These pieces generated hard currency for a regime chronically short of it.
The series was struck by Berne's Monnaie de Paris contractors and distributed heavily through European coin dealers. Mintages were never officially disclosed.
