Issued in the year of Gamal Abdel Nasser's death, this coin was part of a wave of commemorative issues produced by Francophone African states in the late 1960s and early 1970s — many struck by the Paris Mint on behalf of governments with little domestic minting infrastructure. Chad's connection to Nasser was ideological rather than geographic; his pan-Arab and pan-African rhetoric had made him a figure of considerable symbolic weight across the continent, and his death in September 1970 prompted swift commemorative responses from several nations.
