Prehistoric vegetation and rocky terrain are rendered in the lower field, evoking a Cretaceous landscape. The curved legend ANIMAUX PRÉHISTORIQUES arcs along the upper periphery in raised Latin lettering. The species name Tyrannosaurus is inscribed along the lower border, and the date 1994 appears to the lower right of the field.

Aanvullende informatie

Benin has no dinosaur fossil record to speak of — this coin exists purely as a product of the early 1990s novelty collector market, when several small West African nations licensed their minting authority to produce themed issues with no connection to local history or culture. The Republic of Benin issued a substantial series of such pieces through foreign minting intermediaries, largely targeting European and American collectors rather than domestic circulation.

None of these ever saw a cash register in Cotonou.
