Hungary's 1985 wildlife conservation series emerged from the country's obligations under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species, to which the Soviet-aligned Hungarian government had become a signatory in 1974 — an unusual gesture of international environmental cooperation for a Warsaw Pact state. The Eurasian otter had suffered severe population decline across Hungary's river systems through the mid-twentieth century, primarily from agricultural pesticide runoff and unregulated trapping.
The .640 fineness places this squarely in Hungary's mid-period commemorative silver standard, used consistently through the 1980s before the Mint shifted formulations after 1989.
