Issued to commemorate the bicentennial of the Greek War of Independence, this coin belongs to a broader 2021 program coordinated by the Bank of Greece honoring the revolution of 1821. The Friendly Society — the Filiki Eteria — was a secret organization founded in Odessa in 1814 by Greek merchants in the Russian Empire, whose clandestine network across the Ottoman-controlled Greek world laid the organizational groundwork for the uprising that began in March 1821.
The Society's flag, adopted as the coin's subject, carried Masonic-influenced symbolism reflecting the lodge-style oath structure the organization used to recruit members.
