Vasco Núñez de Balboa crossed the Isthmus of Panama in September 1513 and became the first European to sight the Pacific Ocean from the Americas — an event that fundamentally altered European understanding of global geography. This coin was issued exactly five centuries after that crossing. Balboa waded into the water in full armor, sword drawn, and formally claimed the ocean and all lands touching it for the Crown of Castile, a legal gesture that would anchor Spanish imperial ambitions across the entire Pacific basin for the next three centuries.
