King Tomislav is the figure around whom Croatian medieval historiography has built considerable national mythology — he is recorded in a papal letter of 925 AD as the first ruler to bear the title of king, though the documentary record for his reign is thin enough that modern historians argue vigorously about its scope. Croatia's entry into the eurozone on January 1, 2023 created immediate demand for high-denomination commemorative issues in the new currency, and this 100-gram piece is among the most substantial gold strikes the Croatian National Bank has produced under that mandate.
