Issued to mark the 400th anniversary of Felipe II's death — he died in 1598 — this coin belongs to a commemorative gold series the Real Casa de la Moneda has produced sporadically honoring Spanish monarchs of particular historical weight. Felipe II presided over the apex of Spanish imperial power, the 1571 Battle of Lepanto, and the catastrophic loss of the Armada in 1588. His reign also saw the permanent union of the Iberian crowns in 1580 when he inherited the Portuguese throne, briefly making Spain the dominant Atlantic power on both sides.
