Aanvullende informatie

This coin commemorates the 500th anniversary of the death of Charles I of Spain — Holy Roman Emperor Charles V — who died at the monastery of Yuste in Extremadura in 1558 after voluntarily abdicating his vast empire three years earlier. The abdication itself was unprecedented: no Holy Roman Emperor had willingly surrendered the title before him. Charles divided his dominions between his son Philip II, who received Spain and its overseas territories, and his brother Ferdinand I, who took the imperial crown.

The Real Casa de la Moneda issued this as part of a recurring high-denomination gold series aimed squarely at the collector market; circulation was never the intent. Mintages on these issues were tightly controlled.
