Additional information

Issued to mark the 400th anniversary of Cervantes's death, this coin was part of a broader Spanish commemorative program that also included a 10-euro silver piece aimed at wider circulation. Cervantes died in Madrid on April 22, 1616 — almost certainly the same day as Shakespeare, though modern calendar corrections suggest the deaths were actually ten days apart due to Spain's adoption of the Gregorian calendar and England's continued use of the Julian.
