Juan de la Cierva developed the autogyro through a series of failures as much as successes — his first three prototypes crashed due to asymmetric lift across the rotor disc, a problem he solved in 1922 with the invention of the articulated rotor head, which also became foundational to all subsequent helicopter development. The C.4, flown that same year at Getafe, completed the first successful autogyro flight in history.
This coin was issued as part of Spain's ongoing commemorative gold program of the 1990s, which used the 200 euro denomination — denominated in euros two years before Spain formally adopted the currency.
