| Reverse description | A finely detailed bust of the Portuguese navigator Vasco da Gama is depicted facing slightly to the right, wearing a period hat and a draped cloak, with a prominent beard and a cross of the Order of Christ medallion at his chest. To the left of the effigy, the explorer's name 'VASCO DA GAMA' is inscribed in stacked lettering within the field. The circular legend 'PRIMEIRA VIAGEM LISBOA CALECUTE' runs along the upper rim, commemorating his first voyage from Lisbon to Calicut. Along the lower rim, the departure and arrival dates '8 JULHO 1497 - 20 MAIO 1498' are inscribed, flanked by decorative dots. The portrait is rendered in a realistic, sculptural style characteristic of Portuguese commemorative coinage of the period. |
