Obverse description The Portuguese national coat of arms occupies the central field, depicting the traditional shield charged with five escutcheons in cross, each bearing five bezants, and surrounded by seven castles on a red bordure, all rendered in relief against a recessed inner circle. Above the shield, the Order of Christ cross flanked by two armillary sphere emblems appears in the upper field. The denomination '200 ESC' is inscribed below the shield in the lower field. The circular legend 'REPUBLICA PORTUGUESA' arcs along the left and right periphery, with the date '2000' positioned to the right, all contained within a beaded border.

Reverse description A detailed depiction of a Portuguese caravel under full sail dominates the central field, rendered in a cartographic engraving style evoking early sixteenth-century navigational charts. A stylized outline map of Newfoundland or the Terra dos Corte-Reais coastline appears in the upper left field, with a banner-like scroll legend arcing across the upper portion. The heraldic shield of the Corte-Real family is shown in the right field. The dates '1501 - 1502', commemorating the voyages of Gaspar and Miguel Corte-Real to the northwestern Atlantic, are inscribed along the lower exergue within a beaded border.
