Portugal's 200 Escudos commemorative program in the 1990s documented the country's 15th and 16th-century maritime discoveries, and this issue marks the Portuguese encounter with Taiwan — reached by Portuguese sailors around 1544, who reportedly named the island *Ilha Formosa* ("beautiful island"), a name that persisted in European usage for centuries. Whether that sighting constituted a formal landing remains disputed among historians.
The .925 silver version was struck alongside a base-metal circulation issue, the Gomes R 121.03 reference placing it within the collector-targeted subset of the series.
