Francisco Xavier died on Shangchuan Island in December 1552, within sight of the Chinese mainland he never reached, having spent a decade crossing Asia from Goa to Japan building Jesuit missions largely without institutional support. Portugal's claim on his memory is complicated — he was Navarrese by birth, Spanish by training under Ignatius Loyola, and only incidentally Portuguese by the patronage structure that funded his passage east under the padroado.
The R122.01 and R122.02 variants distinguished by Gomes reflect differences in the edge lettering applied during striking.
