| Obverse description | Within a circular arrangement, eleven vessels of the 1500 Armada — nine carracks and two caravels — are depicted at anchor, encircling the Portuguese coat of arms at center. The national arms are rendered in detailed relief, flanked by the armillary sphere and the shield bearing the quinas. The date 1999 and the denomination 200 ESC appear in the lower field, with the mint name INCM and the engraver's signature S.MACHADO also present in the legend. |

This issue marks the 500th anniversary of Cabral's 1500 voyage to Brazil — a landfall that remains historically contested, with substantial evidence suggesting Duarte Pacheco Pereira had reached South American waters as early as 1498. Portugal's official commemorative program chose not to engage with that debate.
The Gomes reference places this as the gold variant within a multi-metal series; the .917 fineness follows the standard established for Portuguese commemorative gold of this period under the INCM's late-1990s collector program.
