| Obverse description | The Portuguese coat of arms occupies the upper central field, flanked by the legend REPUBLICA PORTUGUESA arching above and the date 1998 below. In the lower portion, a classical allegorical scene depicts the sea god Triton carrying the goddess Dione, a reference to the epic poem Os Lusíadas by Luís de Camões celebrating the Portuguese voyage to India. The denomination 200 ESC appears in the exergue.
