Obverse description The Portuguese coat of arms occupies the left field, flanked by naturalistic depictions of two economically significant spice plants: a branch of the clove tree (Syzygium aromaticum) above, and the nutmeg tree (Myristica fragrans) below, both native to the Maluku Islands and among the principal commodities driving European maritime expansion in the 16th century. The surrounding legend identifies the issuing republic, the date, denomination, engraver's signature, and mint authority.
