Portugal issued this platinum strike as part of its Descobrimentos series, which ran across the 1990s and into 2000 to mark the quincentennial voyages of the Age of Discovery. Magalhães — known in English as Magellan — led the first circumnavigation of the globe beginning in 1519, though he died in the Philippines in April 1521 before the voyage was completed. Of the five ships and roughly 270 men who departed Seville, only the Victoria returned, carrying 18 survivors.
The .999 platinum variant is the rarest metal in the Gomes R 137 type, which also exists in gold and silver. Mintages for platinum INCM issues from this period were typically in the low hundreds.
