Cape Verde's FAO coinage series documented the archipelago's ongoing struggle with food security — a chronic vulnerability for a nation with almost no arable land and rainfall so unreliable that famine killed a third of the population as recently as the 1940s. The FAO issues were part of a broader international program encouraging member states to mint coins whose proceeds nominally supported agricultural development initiatives.
KM#34a is the silver variant of an issue also struck in base metal, produced in limited numbers for collectors rather than circulation.
