Quercus araxina is an oak species native to the Araks River valley, a region whose ecology has been under pressure since the Soviet-era drainage and agricultural projects that drastically altered the riparian zones along the Armenian-Turkish and Armenian-Iranian borders. Armenia's ongoing series of circulation coins featuring endemic flora reflects a deliberate program by the Central Bank to document species whose ranges have contracted sharply since the mid-twentieth century.
