Palau's Marine Life Protection series, launched in 1992, was one of the earliest coin programs to systematically exploit a niche collector market around environmental themes — and one of the most commercially successful. The 2000 gold issue marks the series reaching a decade of continuous production, by which point the coins were distributed almost exclusively through dealer networks in the United States and Germany rather than through any domestic Palauan circulation. Palau itself adopted the U.S. dollar as its official currency upon independence in 1994, making its own bullion and commemorative output purely a revenue instrument.
