| 表面の説明 | Against a mirror-polished field, two allegorical figures are depicted in high relief: at left, a seated mermaid with flowing hair extends her hand in greeting, while at right, a bearded Neptune-like figure stands draped and holding a trident. A radiant sun with elongated rays rises between them in the upper field. The arc legend REPUBLIC OF PALAU runs along the upper periphery within a beaded border, and the denomination 200 $ is inscribed in large numerals along the lower field. |

Palau gained independence from the United States on October 1, 1994, ending a trusteeship arrangement that had been in place since 1947 under UN mandate. This coin was issued the same year, making it among the earliest gold issues of the newly sovereign republic. The Compact of Free Association signed with the United States preserved American defense obligations while granting full self-governance — an arrangement that shaped Palau's economic dependence on external revenue streams, of which commemorative coin programs became a notable part.
