The International Year of the Child, declared by the United Nations for 1979, prompted a wave of commemorative issues from Commonwealth mints. Barbados was among the more prolific participants, releasing both gold and silver versions of this type — the "a" suffix in the KM reference distinguishes the gold strike from its silver companion KM#29.
Barbados gained full independence in 1966 and established the Central Bank only in 1972, making issues like this still relatively early in the nation's sovereign minting history.
