This issue belongs to the RCM's 22-karat gold "Masterpieces in Gold" landscape series, which ran through the mid-1990s and drew on the tradition of the Group of Seven — the nationalist painting movement that had spent decades arguing, sometimes contentiously, that Canadian wilderness deserved its own visual idiom distinct from European convention. The 1996 entry was the final coin in the series.
Mintage was capped at 6,000 pieces worldwide.
