Additional information

The Habitant Farm design draws from Cornelius Krieghoff, the Dutch-born painter whose mid-19th century depictions of rural Quebec life became commercially successful precisely because English and American collectors found them picturesque. Whether they accurately represented habitant existence or romanticized it for outside consumption remains a live debate among Canadian art historians.

This was part of the Royal Canadian Mint's ongoing 22-karat gold $200 series launched in 1990, each year pairing the denomination with a commissioned or adapted work of Canadian art.
