Fiji's 2012 gold program leaned heavily into Pacific regional identity at a moment when the country was still operating under the military government that had seized power in Bainimarama's 2006 coup — making the continued use of Elizabeth II's effigy a quietly pointed political signal, given the Commonwealth had suspended Fiji's membership in 2009. The colorization applied to the reverse was added post-strike using a resin-transfer process, a technique that gained traction among Pacific mint programs in the early 2010s as a way to differentiate bullion-adjacent issues in a crowded collector market.
