The 2009 Year of the Ox issue sits in the middle of Perth Mint's long-running Lunar Series II, which launched in 2008 and committed the mint to a full 12-year cycle of animal releases. The Ox holds particular significance in that 1949 — the founding year of the People's Republic of China — was itself an Ox year, a detail not lost on the Chinese collector market that drives demand for this series.
The .9999 fineness was a deliberate commercial decision to undercut the Royal Canadian Mint's .9999 Gold Maple Leaf, which had held a near-monopoly on four-nines gold bullion since 1982.
