The Perth Mint's lunar series coins occupy an unusual position in the bullion market: they carry legal tender face values wildly disconnected from their metal content, issued under a licensing arrangement with the Royal Australian Mint that gives Perth — a state government enterprise in Western Australia — the authority to produce Australian legal tender. The 2012 dragon issue falls in the second iteration of the lunar series, which began in 2008 after the first series concluded in 2007.
Two-ounce gold lunar pieces from this run had mintages capped at 1,000 worldwide.
