| 背面描述 | A highly detailed, naturalistic depiction of a koala (Phascolarctos cinereus) perched on a eucalyptus branch, rendered in high relief against a mirror-polished proof field. The animal is shown facing forward with its distinctive rounded ears, prominent nose, and clawed forepaws gripping the branch, with eucalyptus leaves visible to the left. The 'P' mintmark of the Perth Mint appears to the lower left of the central design, alongside the designer's initials 'WR'. The legend '2oz 9999 GOLD' is inscribed in the lower exergual area. |

Australia's gold koala bullion series launched in 1980 under the Australian Nugget branding before being reoriented toward the koala theme in the late 1980s, with the Perth Mint taking full operational control as it expanded its bullion program to compete directly with the Krugerrand and Maple Leaf in the international market. The two-troy-ounce denomination occupies an awkward commercial niche — too large for most retail bullion buyers, it was aimed squarely at institutional and high-net-worth collectors who preferred fewer, heavier pieces over multiples of the standard one-ounce.
The koala design changes annually, which the Perth Mint established as policy specifically to encourage year-on-year collector demand rather than purely weight-based trading.
