Issued ahead of the London 2012 Games, this piece was part of a broader Royal Australian Mint program marking Australia's Olympic participation — a country that had sent athletes to every Summer Games since 1896, missing only 1904. The pad-printing technique used on the coin, which deposits color directly onto the metal surface rather than applying enamel, was still a relatively novel application in Australian commemorative coinage at this point.
