Obverse description The third effigy of Queen Elizabeth II faces right, rendered after the portrait by Raphael David Maklouf, depicting the Queen diademed and draped, wearing the King George IV State Diadem. The legend arcing around the upper field reads ELIZABETH II AUSTRALIA, with the denomination 200 DOLLARS and the engraver's initials RDM positioned in the lower field.

Reverse description A naturalistically rendered koala (Phascolarctos cinereus) is depicted clinging to and seated upon a eucalyptus branch in the centre of the field, holding and nibbling eucalyptus leaves with its forepaws. The legend THE AUSTRALIAN KOALA arcs along the upper periphery, with the weight designation 2 OZ., purity .9995, and the word PLATINUM arranged along the right border. The date 1997 appears in the lower exergue, flanked by a dotted inner border, and the Perth Mint privy mark P is visible at lower centre, with the engraver's initials JR in the right mid-field.
