| Reverse description | A naturalistically rendered koala is depicted clinging to and ascending a eucalyptus branch, its body oriented to the left with the head turned to face right. Foliage and smaller branches frame the composition, with the engraver's initials JB visible at lower left of the central device. The circular legend THE AUSTRALIAN KOALA 2 OZ 9995 PLATINUM arcs around the upper field, while the year of issue appears in the lower exergue flanked by raised dots. |

| Additional information |
Australia's platinum koala series launched in 1987 as one of the first government-backed platinum bullion programs in the world, competing directly with the Soviet Platinum Palladium issues and the Isle of Man Noble. The two-ounce denomination was the series' heaviest standard issue, struck in .9995 fine platinum at a time when Perth was aggressively positioning itself as a premium bullion producer for Asian investment markets.
Annual mintages for the two-ounce pieces remained tightly controlled throughout the 1992–1997 run. The koala design changed each year — a deliberate policy decision to drive collector demand alongside bullion buyers.
