Australia's platinum koala series launched in 1987 as one of the first government-backed platinum bullion programs in the world, competing directly with the Soviet Platinum Palladium issues and the Isle of Man Noble. The two-ounce denomination was the series' heaviest standard issue, struck in .9995 fine platinum at a time when Perth was aggressively positioning itself as a premium bullion producer for Asian investment markets.
Annual mintages for the two-ounce pieces remained tightly controlled throughout the 1992–1997 run. The koala design changed each year — a deliberate policy decision to drive collector demand alongside bullion buyers.
